Real Wedding: Mission Point Resort – Mackinac Island, Michigan

Kari and Mark had a beautiful wedding at the Mission Point Resort of Art in Mackinac Island, Michigan.  It was a gorgeous, warm, sunny day with clear blue skies.  The wedding ceremony took place in the outdoor gazebo on the lawn of the Mission Point Resort.  For the reception dinner the party moved to the Carriage House restaurant at the Iroquois Hotel with private seating in the outside patio.  It was a picture-perfect wedding to remember.

Real Wedding: Raphael Vineyard – Peconic, NY

How great are weddings on a vineyard?  Looking at the photos from Felicia & James wedding at the Raphael Vineyard in Peconic, NY really gives you a sense of how perfect it can be.  With acres of lush green vineyards and beautiful, rustic, old-world architecture, their wedding has a very warm, timeless feel.  Their outdoor ceremony overlooked the vineyards and the weather was perfect (the North Fork of Long Island is considered by many to be the sunniest spot in New York State).  Did I mention that world-class wine was served :).

The Venue
The Raphael Vineyard winery was designed by John Petrocelli who was inspired by the Italian monasteries of his ancestral home.  The Renaissance Room, with antique finishes, seats up to 180, with full views of the vineyards.

Real Wedding: City Club at River Ranch – Lafayette, LA

It was a beautiful day for Brianna & Michael’s southern wedding at the City Club at River Ranch in Lafayette, LA.  The City Club was a great location, with extensive outdoor space, providing a perfect backdrop for their wedding.  Their ceremony took place under a large, octagon-shaped, gazebo — with the charm and character of an authentic red barn.  The gazebo is surrounded by lush landscaping and has a red-stone walkway that was perfect for their walk down the aisle.  The reception took place in the elegant Fleur de Lis banquet room.

Real Wedding: Las Caletas – Mexico

Since our last destination wedding in Mexico was so popular, we’re very excited to feature Lety & Ryan’s wedding in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.  According to a recent Conde Nast Bridal Group survey, nearly one  in ten couples opt for a destination wedding; with Mexico holding the number five spot on the list [Modern Bride].  Looking at these photos, it’s hard to question this trend.

The Venue
Las Caletas offers destination wedding packages with breathtaking natural backdrops provided by the Sierra Madre Mountains.  The location is accessible only by boat, making it a perfect, secluded and romantic setting.

Lety & Ryan took advantage of the natural beauty of the location and kept things simple.  White chair skirts with blue ribbons, yellow and orange flowers, and Lety’s white flower hair clip perfectly complemented the setting.  A small, intimate, ceremony with close friends and family was followed by a lively reception organized by Las Caletas Adventure Weddings.  The reception included dancing on the beach, dining beside a campfire, fireworks and flame-twirling performances.  With so much fire, this was definitely a “hot” wedding that will be remembered by all guests for a long time :).  Do I even have to mention that the photos taken by KLK PHOTOGRAPHY are stunning!

Real Wedding: Maple Grove Inn

It was a perfect, late summer, day for Kelly & Andy’s wedding at the Maple Grove Inn in Knoxville, Tennessee.  With fifteen bridesmaids and seventeen groomsmen, this was quite a large wedding party, in need of a venue with lots of outdoor space.

Maple Grove Inn definitely fit the bill.  Built in 1799, this historic Georgian style inn is one of Knoxville’s oldest residences.  A tour through it’s facilities and grounds is like a journey back in time.  The Inn is a charming place, rich with southern hospitality and restored to its original grandeur with lavishly decorated antiques, hand carved fireplaces and family heirlooms abound.

Kelly & Andy took full advantage of the location with a beautiful outdoor ceremony and tented reception.  The theme was yellow and the bridesmaid dresses, groomsmen ties and flowers all blended perfectly with the picturesque grounds.

Real Wedding: Backyard Wedding in New Jersey

Nothing like rolling out of bed, opening your back door and walking down the aisle .. well, not exactly.  It takes a great team and excellent coordination to plan a beautiful backyard wedding like the one bride and groom Ginger & Tim hosted last summer.  After a lovely outdoor ceremony, guests moved into a tented reception area, decorated with white flowers, vines and suspended white lanterns.  A full-size dance floor was also available.  Potted plant table cards further added to the natural feeling, white and green, theme of this wedding.  If everyone decided to have backyard weddings like this, we could just close up ReceptionHalls.com ;).  Photographs by Timecut Photography.

Outdoor weddings: the good, the bad and the bugs

A little over ten years ago, we were saying our vows beside a charming quiet lake.  Our friends and family were all present along with one other guest.  Unfortunately, this guest was uninvited and brought along a few thousand friends — MOSQUITOES!!!

We planned and prepared the details months before to ensure everything went well, but overlooked one item.  It warmed up quite a bit that week (first week of June) and the mosquito eggs must have recently hatched unleashing a swarm of hungry guests — I’m sure you can picture the rest ;-).

Looking back, besides a few bites and annoyance, everything turned out well.  The actual reception was indoors, overlooking the lake, and the bugs were soon forgotten. We still have great  memories of our wedding and quite a few laughs when our friends bring up stories of our “buggy” wedding.  However, the bugs definitely impacted our ceremony pictures and video (lots of  swatting and hand waving throughout).  I also felt bad for our brave string quartet that kept playing throughout the ceremony.  Maybe we should have given out personalized bug repellent as a favor :-).

Planning for an outdoor wedding ceremony and reception:

We have an information page with some things to consider when planning an outdoor wedding reception, but here is a quick list from my own experience:

  • Price and availability: Due to the weather (in most geographic areas), you will likely be limited to the peak wedding season.  Book early and expect a higher price per person.
  • Have an indoor backup: Try to find a venue with venue with suitable in-door space (and be sure it is available on the day of your reception) in case of inclement weather.  Rain, wind or bugs can be a major issue and having a backup option is great.
  • Ask about seasonal bugs, animals and birds around your planned date: We never thought to ask about mosquitoes, but we should have.  It’s also possible that certain seasonal birds, squirrels or other animals might be more prevalent at different times of the year.
  • Visit the venue, at least once, on the same day of the week and time of your ceremony/reception (if possible).  We visited our venue a few months before and moved on to other wedding items.  If we had visited the week before (at dusk), we would have likely noticed the bugs.  Visiting on the same day of the week is also a good idea, since you might notice potential ambient noise due to traffic patterns, etc.

I’m sure there are  things we left out, so feel free to share your outdoor wedding planning tips as well.  Also review some outdoor wedding and reception venues for ideas.
